Getting Greener

My thumb, that is. Nothing is worse for a self-proclaimed terrible gardener than the dry, hot AZ climate. I was only able to keep rosemary alive in the desert. Luckily, the climate of the Pacific Northwest is a bit kinder to folks like me. Our garden is thriving this year thanks to all our rain. The rhododendrons gave their typical show and the bare root hostas I planted last year are doing great (to be honest, I thought they had died) . In addition to the great hop experiment (I swear those things have grown 3 feet since we put them in), I also planted my herb garden: two kinds of oregano, two kinds of thyme, two kinds of sage, two kinds of lavender, garlic chives, regular chives, bay, rosemary, and three kinds of mint. We also decided to plant some viburnum bushes we picked up at Costco on a whim. Notice the decided lack of annuals.....That is by design since I don't enjoy gardening enough to be constantly replacing them and I figure I can always pick up basil, cilantro, and parsley at the Farmer's Market. Sorry Mom.....

I totally understand you. Remember when we moved to Michigan and thought that vegetable gardening was crazy since it's easier and cheaper just to drive to Meijers. Well - as I got older, I found gardening a relief from my work stress. It still is - Dad said that I am just laying out a big smorgasbord for the deer, rabbits, raccoons, to name a few. Don't care - this year, we have spinach, beets, carrots, greens, herbs (sage, basil, oregano, chives, etc). I guess this will be a good subject for my next blog - after I publish two blogs in a draft mode.

Katherine send me an article on African violets and how people appreciate it as time passes. I'll dig that and send it to you.

Love,

Mom
