Taming the Monkey Brain

That is what my yoga instructor said we needed to do to fully unite our spiritual and physical selves. And it is what she reminds us to do as she becomes the evil instructor gently guiding us through poses that work our central navel point. Translation? A series of poses designed to fully work our abdominal core until we beg for mercy.

Granted, she is easy on us, relatively speaking, by only making us hold/repeat each for five minutes. I've read that beginner Indian warriors had to hold the same poses for 15 minutes at the start of their training and then build up to hours! Thanks, but no thanks!

Despite all the *New-Agey* stuff, yoga is proving a boone to my sanity and stress levels. I have a lot more energy now and am better at taking all of life's little pitfalls in stride. It also occured to me as I was packing up my gear last night that my mat really needs a stylish home of its own. It was looking quite forlorn stuffed into my gym bag. So tonight, I've cast on for a felted mat bag.

Since knitting is a meditation unto itself and I've exercised great restraint by not rushing out to buy new yarn and instead using stash scraps, is there a better name for this project than Taming My Monkey Brain?

Hi Raquel,

I feel the same way too about yoga. Actually, I found an instructor here and may go to her class tonight. I tell Daddy that some of the yoga poses makes me sweat more than playing tennis. I got several vinyasa yoga dvd that are quite good.

Namaste,

Mom
